My rating: 5 of 5 stars
This book completely blew me away. I went in basically blind, only knowing that it was part of the Moments in Boston series but purposefully avoided any information about the story. When Darkness Ends was.... dark. Much more so than any of the other Marni Mann books I've devoured. But it worked so well for this story line. I enjoyed the gritty suspense of the story and found that it kept me guessing and wondering. This is certainly not a sugary sweet romance read, but it's worth the pain to get to the end!
I'll start by saying every single character in this book brought something profound to the story. The main characters were intriguing, likeable, and truly good human beings. You couldn't help but fall in love with them. The side characters elevated this story to another level. Between Dylan, Ashe's best friend (Ugh! talk about opening old wounds!!!!!) and Gran, Pearl's Grandmother, you were constantly surrounded by incredible personalities that carried this story.
Ashe will go down as one of the most amazing heroes ever written! That man had the patience of a saint and proved over and over again that he was one of the good ones. His loyalty and dedication to those he loved and cared about was unwavering, even in the darkest of times. I couldn't find a single thing about him to dislike!
Pearl was so incredibly strong. I admired her from the very start. She was selfless beyond belief and had a heart of gold. Everyone who had the opportunity to be in her presence knew it too. She was one of those characters that you couldn't help but root for!
I really enjoyed the multiple POVs this story was told from. The time jump between "before" and "now" was fascinating. It was never confusing and seemed to help keep the story interesting. The insight it gave you into the couple's past really helped shape the feelings and emotions in the "now".
This book broke me. It was gut-wrenchingly sad and painful. It had moments of pure joy and moments of absolute desperation. Marni did a phenomenal job weaving emotion into this read from start to finish. The roller coaster of ups and downs kept me turning the pages at rapid pace. I was enamored with the suspense of the story and needed to know what was going on. I couldn't put this read down!
