Review: Shadows

Shadows (Bayou Magic, #1)Shadows by Kristen Proby
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

This was my first book by Kristen Proby and came highly recommended to me. I'm new to the PNR genre, so I went into this book with an open mind and no expectations. I really liked all of the characters in the story and found that they each brought something to the table. The cross over between paranormal and taboo was intriguing and kept my mind occupied on all of the events that were taking place. This story had it all! Shadows/spirits, spells, potions, witchcraft, possession, and more.

The author didn't put the romance component of this story on front street, which worked well for the story. It was more of a secondary component of the novel. I found that really it made it easier to accept the "instant love" vibe that Brielle and Cash gave off.

I liked that the author left the story with somewhat of a cliffhanger, but the most important aspects of the story were resolved by the end of the read. I will definitely be reading the next book in the series.

I listened to this book on audio and found the narration of the main character a little hard to get into because Samantha Brentmoor felt like she was trying too hard to force a strong New Orleans accent. I'm a Jason Clarke lover and it made me cringe when he popped into the story as the voice of the villain. It totally gave me the chills, but he did an amazing job being the bad guy! Lee Samuels' narration of Cash was superb.

I received this audiobook from Valentine PR in exchange for an honest review.
