Chasing the Moon by S.M. Soto Review

My rating: 3 of 5 stars
This is probably going to be the hardest book for me to review this year. I'm torn in two between love and loathe for this one. I think S.M. Soto is an incredible writer and story teller. I've read so many books by her that have blown my mind. This one just wasn't one of them. I couldn't get into the story due to my distaste for the main characters. It's almost impossible to adequately review this book without giving too much away.
I thought the heroine was immature for the majority of the book. She made some really bad decisions based on petty/juvenile emotional reactions. I wanted to like her so badly because she seemed really sweet and caring but I just couldn't. Her character was pitched as this super smart girl but she made some pretty stupid decisions. So much of the book was spent regurgitating internal thoughts and emotions, I lost interest very quickly.
The hero was one of the only saving graces of this read. Endymion was the sole reason I kept reading no matter how many times I wanted to DNF. I can't really say one bad thing about his character. He was always caring, thoughtful, kind and attentive. When he needed to, he stepped up and took responsibility for his actions. He proved where his priorities were when it mattered the most. He was genuinely a good man! Even when he acted foolish or harsh, it was because he was hurt or felt betrayed and had the rights to those emotional reactions. I was enraptured with his relationship with Luna from their very first encounter.
The last 30% of this book was by far my favorite. Likely because it was when the MCs finally got their crap together and the story held my attention. I would give the last 1/3 of the book 5 stars! It was emotionally gripping, heartbreaking and beautiful. End and Selene had to wade their way through some very heavy and triggering situations. The trauma they experienced seemed to really mature both of them and make them open their eyes to reality. The epilogue was so sweet and I really liked how everything fell into place for the couple.
I ended up giving this read a solid 3 stars. I honestly didn't care for the first 60%-ish of the book because it all felt so immature, naïve and painfully repetitive. Mostly I was just pissed off for Luna's character. She deserved better.
