The blurb for Torn Apart intrigued me. I’ve read many books by both authors and knew what greatness they were capable of.
The first thing that caught my attention was that there were multiple POVs from varying characters. This made the read seem almost like it was 4 separate stories happening within one overarching storyline. Once the characters’ stories started to cross over and mesh together, things got a little messy.
I really enjoyed each character on their own but when they started having feelings for one another, I started to lose interest in them as individuals.
Ashton was cold and arrogant, yet intelligent and capable. He hated being under his father’s thumb and used every opportunity to rebel. He flaunted his sexuality and didn’t care what anyone thought which I appreciated. I was grateful for the unique relationship he’d found with his BFF Mia and the loyalty he exerted towards her.
I adored Mia, but she felt a bit like an unrealistic fantasy of a heroine. A super hot and smart girl who downplays her looks and is a gamer nerd that’s in love with her gay BFF. As her story unfolded, I felt much more sympathy for her and understood her vulnerability and desire to hide. I understood her attraction to her best friend and why she had a hard time moving on with someone else. It was heartbreaking.
I honestly didn’t care for the dynamic between hockey star Brayden and his coach Drew. The entire book hinted at some kind of fallout (readers were led to believe it was sexual). Then when it was finally revealed, it felt so anticlimactic given the nature of the entire story.
By the last few chapters, I expected a full on orgy. None of the characters could keep it in their pants! Everyone was hooking up with everyone else, mostly behind each others’ backs. It was a lot, especially since some of these characters claimed to be in love with each other. It’s like extreme sexual frustration clouded everyone’s judgment. I knew it’d end in a cliffhanger being that it’s a duet, but I didn’t see THAT ending coming, which was a pleasant surprise!
My rating of 3.5 stars was due to personal preference and my unique tastes. I very much enjoyed the writing by this duo, the characters as unique individuals and their individual struggles and family drama. I didn’t care so much for the direction the relationships took or how the characters treated each other when they started uncovering the hidden truths between them. I do want to see how this story plays out in book 2 and who ends up with who!
